Anyone collecting 40% silver Eisenhower Dollars? I seldom hear them mentioned anywhere. |
Re: 40% Eisenhower dollars anyone?
In case you didn't know, they aren't all 40% silver. I believe only the ones with a "S" mintmark are 40% silver. The rest are 100% clad.

Re: 40% Eisenhower dollars anyone?
I have 3 and they are all clad.
I have quite a few silver Kennedies though. The bank is nice enough to stick a few in their half dollar rolls. :) |
Re: 40% Eisenhower dollars anyone?
I think they are not mentioned as much because they didn't circulate like the 40% Kennedy halves.
I see that the coinflation site lists them as circulating but they were never circulated. It is like a 1970 half, it is 40% but it is only in proof and mint sets. 65GT350 |

Re: 40% Eisenhower dollars anyone?
40% Ikes were struck for collectors in limited numbers from 1972-1976. All have "S" mint marks except (be careful...some 1776-1976 Bicentennial "S" mint coins are copper nickel clad. All the coins that contain silver are also clad. They're comprised of outer layers of alloyed .800 silver and .200 copper bonded to an inner core of alloyed .209 silver and .791 copper. Total Ag weight per coin is .3161 oz.
Non-silver Iks are like all the clad dimes, quarters, and halves: virtual "slugs". |
Re: 40% Eisenhower dollars anyone?
My father in law was a slot machine manager for forty years and a coin collector/hoarder.
Along with a very nice hoard of silver he left my wife 4 unopened mint bags of 1979 Ike dollars. I sold the bags in 1998 for just under $1300.00 each and bought 90% junk below $5.00 spot before leaving the building. We ended up with several antique Mill's quarter slot machines too so the only slugs I collect are quarters. I really ought to find out the legalities on the sale of the slot machines. When it's all your money they are no fun to play and they just take up space. |
